How to Transition Your Skincare Routine for Fall: 7 Esthetician-Approved Tips

There is always a moment at the beginning of fall when your skin seems to change before you have changed anything. Maybe it feels tighter after cleansing, your makeup is settling differently, or the moisturizer that worked all summer suddenly is not enough.
Your skin is not being difficult. It is responding to its environment.
Cooler temperatures, lower humidity, wind, and indoor heating can all affect how well the skin holds onto moisture. Research has found that low humidity and low temperatures can reduce skin-barrier function and make skin more vulnerable to dryness and stress. The answer is not to throw away your entire routine. Usually, a few thoughtful adjustments are enough.
After more than 17 years in the treatment room, this is the approach I recommend when transitioning your skincare routine from summer into fall.
1. Pay attention before adding more products
Before changing your routine, notice what your skin is actually telling you. Common signs that it may need more support include:
- Tightness after cleansing
- Dry or flaky areas
- Increased sensitivity or stinging
- Makeup sitting unevenly
- Skin that looks dull even when it feels oily
You may not need seven new products. You may simply need gentler cleansing, less frequent exfoliation, or a little more moisture. Skincare works best when it responds to your skin instead of chasing a trend.
2. Choose a cleanser that leaves your skin comfortable
If your face feels tight, squeaky, or stripped after washing, your cleanser may be doing too much. Fall is a good time to move toward a gentle cleanser that removes makeup, sunscreen, and daily buildup without leaving the skin uncomfortable.
Use lukewarm—not hot—water, cleanse with a light touch, and pat your face dry. The American Academy of Dermatology also recommends gentle cleansing and warm water for skin that is becoming dry.
Christal’s skin note: Clean is a feeling. Squeaky is a warning.
The Lumis Hydrating Peptide Cleansing Foam is designed to make this first step feel soft and supportive rather than harsh. It is the kind of uncomplicated foundation a fall routine needs.
3. Adjust your exfoliation instead of abandoning it
Exfoliation can help improve the look of dullness and uneven texture, but more is not better—especially when the weather is changing. If your skin is dry, sensitized, or irritated, reduce your frequency and give the barrier time to settle.
For many people, one or two exfoliation nights per week is enough. Avoid stacking several exfoliating acids, scrubs, and strong actives in the same routine. On exfoliation nights, keep everything else simple: cleanse, exfoliate as directed, hydrate, and moisturize.
If your skin burns, stays red, or feels increasingly uncomfortable, stop exfoliating and speak with a dermatologist or qualified skincare professional.
4. Layer hydration rather than relying on one heavy cream
Healthy-looking fall skin needs both hydration and moisture. Hydrating ingredients help support water within the skin, while a moisturizer helps reduce that water loss and leaves the surface feeling comfortable.
After cleansing, apply a lightweight hydrating serum, allow it to settle, and then follow with moisturizer. This layered approach usually feels better than applying one very heavy product and hoping it does every job.
Eternal Youth Blue Copper Peptide Serum provides weightless hydration while supporting the appearance of smoother texture, more even-looking tone, firmness, and radiance. It fits comfortably into both morning and evening routines and is especially useful when skin begins to feel less resilient.
5. Give your evening routine a little more support
Nighttime is the ideal moment to slow down and give the skin what it needs without making the routine complicated. During fall, your evening moisturizer may need to be richer than the one you used during summer.
After cleansing and applying your serum, finish with a comfortable moisturizer that helps seal everything in. The Lumis Collagen Renewal Overnight Treatment is one of my favorite ways to support dry or mature-looking skin overnight. It leaves the routine feeling complete without requiring six unnecessary steps.
6. Keep wearing sunscreen—even when the sky turns gray
The end of summer is not the end of UV exposure. Ultraviolet radiation is present throughout the year, including on cloudy days. Continue using a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning and follow the directions on its label, including reapplication when appropriate.
This matters even more when your routine includes exfoliating ingredients or when uneven tone and visible signs of aging are among your concerns. Consistency with sun protection protects the progress you are working so hard to make.
7. Choose consistency over intensity
The strongest routine is not always the most aggressive one. It is the routine you can follow consistently without leaving your skin in a constant cycle of irritation and recovery.
Give your fall routine time. Introduce one adjustment at a time, watch how your skin responds, and remember that visible changes do not happen overnight. Skin thrives on rhythm: cleanse, treat, moisturize, protect, repeat.
A simple fall skincare routine
Morning
- Gentle cleanse—or rinse with lukewarm water if that is enough for your skin
- Apply Eternal Youth Blue Copper Peptide Serum
- Follow with moisturizer
- Finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen
Evening
- Cleanse thoroughly but gently
- Apply Eternal Youth Blue Copper Peptide Serum
- Apply Peptide Eye Lift around the eye area
- Finish with Collagen Renewal Overnight Treatment
Add exfoliation one or two evenings per week based on your skin’s tolerance. A soothing or hydrating mask can be used on a separate evening when your skin needs extra comfort. If you use an enzyme-based pumpkin mask, follow its instructions carefully and save it for a day when your skin feels calm—not already irritated.
