The Correct Order to Apply Skincare Products: A Step-by-Step Guide

Knowing the correct skincare routine order can feel surprisingly confusing. Does serum go before moisturizer? Where does eye cream fit? And do you really need to wait between every step?

After more than 17 years of working hands-on with skin as a licensed esthetician, here's what I want you to know: your skincare routine does not need to be complicated to be effective.

In fact, I would much rather see you consistently use a few well-chosen products than struggle through a 10-step routine you don't enjoy.

Here's a simple way to layer your skincare products—and why the order matters.

Why Does Skincare Routine Order Matter?

Different skincare products are formulated to perform different jobs. Applying them in a logical order helps each product fit comfortably into your routine and prevents heavier formulas from getting in the way of lighter ones.

A helpful general rule is to apply products from lighter textures to richer textures, while always keeping the individual product directions in mind.

Step 1: Cleanser

Every good skincare routine starts with cleansing.

At night, cleansing removes makeup, sunscreen, excess oil, and the buildup your skin has encountered throughout the day. In the morning, you may also choose to cleanse depending on your skin type and routine.

Most importantly, your skin shouldn't routinely feel painfully tight or stripped after washing.

If that's happening, read our guide to the Hydrating Peptide Cleanser and why your cleansing step matters more than you may think.

Step 2: Toner or Essence — Optional

This step isn't mandatory.

Depending on the formula, a toner or essence can add hydration or deliver additional skincare ingredients after cleansing. But you don't need to add one simply because you've been told every routine needs seven different steps.

If your skin is happy without one, keep going.

Step 3: Treatment Serum

Next comes your treatment serum.

Serums generally have lighter textures and are formulated with targeted ingredients for concerns such as hydration, uneven-looking tone, texture, or visible signs of aging.

This is where Lumis Eternal Youth Serum fits into the routine.

Eternal Youth is formulated with GHK-Cu, also known as Copper Tripeptide-1, alongside hyaluronic acid, tranexamic acid, Centella asiatica, green tea, licorice, and chamomile.

Step 4: Eye Cream

If you use an eye cream, this is an easy place to incorporate it into your routine.

Use a small amount and gently apply it around the eye area according to the product directions. There's no need to aggressively rub or tug at the skin.

Gentle application wins here.

Step 5: Moisturizer

Next comes moisturizer.

Moisturizers help maintain hydration and support the skin barrier by helping reduce water loss.

Your ideal moisturizer can change depending on your skin, climate, and even the time of day. You might prefer something lighter during the day and something more nourishing at night.

Step 6: Sunscreen — Every Morning

During the day, sunscreen should be the final step in your skincare routine before makeup.

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and apply it generously to exposed skin. Remember that sunscreen also needs to be reapplied, particularly during prolonged outdoor exposure, swimming, or sweating.

If you're investing in products for visible aging or uneven-looking pigmentation while ignoring sun protection, you're missing one of the most important steps in your routine.

What About Exfoliants, Retinol, and Other Actives?

This is where routines can become unnecessarily complicated.

Not every active ingredient needs to be used every night, and layering multiple potentially irritating treatments doesn't automatically produce faster or better results.

If your skin has become tight, dry, sensitive, or reactive, your routine may need simplifying.

How Long Should You Wait Between Skincare Steps?

You generally don't need to stand in your bathroom with a timer between every product.

For many routines, allowing one product to settle enough that the next layer can be applied comfortably is sufficient.

Some treatments have specific application instructions, however, so always follow the directions for the individual product you're using.

The Best Skincare Routine Is the One You'll Actually Follow

There will always be another trending ingredient, another viral routine, and someone online telling you that you're missing a step.

Don't let that make skincare harder than it needs to be.

Start with the fundamentals: cleanse gently, choose targeted treatments for your actual concerns, moisturize, and protect your skin from the sun.

Then stay consistent.

Your skin doesn't need the longest routine. It needs the right routine for you.
